The state seal of California was all over the office, outside the front of the building, on the 6th floor by the elevators and all over Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher's office. We had to dress in business (POL) attire everyday because we were in a professional office setting. I was really excited about dressing up on the first day, but I got over it pretty quickly.

On our first Wednesday at internship our mentor (Francine) came with us for lunch. She showed us "Food Truck Wednesdays", which was really cool. There were a lot of different options for food and it was a nice walk to get out of the office. I had a really good burrito and I wish we could've gone back a second time.

There were a lot of other offices of elected officials in the state building. On the 6th floor with us we had Assemblymembers Todd Gloria and Shirley Weber, and on the 4th floor was the office of Senator Toni Atkins. So we also had access to a shared courtroom and conference room, which had paintings that made it look like we were on the Assembly floor in Sacramento.

We were able to help prep for the Assemblywoman's Junior Legislator program that happens every summer. The Junior Legislators get to learn how to draft a bill and then present it to Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher. These high school students spend most of their time in this old courtroom that is now used for events (and a pretty cool place to take photos).

As well as staffing meetings we were able to attend events on behalf of Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher. We went to The Spirit of the Barrio, which is an amazing event hosted by Family Health Centers. We listened to a panel of professionals talk about immigration issues and how these issues affect San Diego in a unique way, also the food was amazing.

My group of 4 interns really wanted to do our internship project together, and we really struggled with committing to an idea for the first 2 weeks. We we're going to make a zine, and then a social media campaign, and then both. And we went through a series of critiques both with Francine and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher.

Another skill/experience that really impacted me was being able to attend an event on my own (with Ana). We were able to speak at Montgomery Adult School's Scholarship Ceremony and present certificates on behalf of the Assemblywoman. This was really impactful because I saw first hand how the work we do at the District Office affects the lives of the people in the 80th Assembly District.

On the last day of our internship we brought gifts for everyone at the office. Even though Francine was our official mentor we considered Diamond, Lucero and Lucas our mentors as well. We got them all flowers/foods/ gift cards/ thank you cards to try to show our appreciation for all they have done for us this past month.
|
On our last day we organized a big potluck with out #InternshipFamily. We had all of our mentors and even some other interns come, we even had our youngest intern (Nia, Diamond's daughter) come in to celebrate with us. One of my favorite things about this experience was creating such good connections with everyone in the office.

J. Craig Venter Institute I would like to intern at JCVI because I think I will gain a lot of knowledge about science and technology specifically the basics of microbiology and chemistry. I will also get to have real life experience of researching and working in a lab. Salk Institute for Biological Studies
I would like to intern at Salk because the campus is really beautiful and I could learn a lot while being an intern there. They also organize a lot of events so it would be cool to see how those events are organized and the type of people that come to them. I would be able to see how a research institute works and meet a lot of professionals in the field I might want to go into. County of San Diego I would like to intern with the San Diego County because I could learn a lot. I’m not really sure what I could learn but I feel like these are in a different category than the research institutes. I think it would be cool to see how these department functions on a county wide scale so like the more political side of science and how it’s used in real life. Also I could gain a lot of important contacts for the San Diego area. |
